Construction Costs: Learning the Basics

I recently stumbled across an article on Zillow regarding home construction costs that I thought was really interesting for both agents and consumers. It highlights the differences in builder costs when it comes to different types of home construction. Of note:

  • two story homes are cheaper to build that one story
  • gabled, high-pitched roofs add substantial costs
  • interior finishes (cabinets, fixtures, etc.) should run 30%-40% of total cost
  • splurge on upgrades in the kitchen and master – they’ll pay off later
  • be realistic on budget and time frame – new construction often runs late
